ATC Lasham has specialised in Boeing 757 heavy maintenance for years at its Hampshire
UK maintenance base. By acquiring a heavy maintenance base at Southend, they now have the objective of
increasing the proportion of narrow-bodied Airbus maintenance work they do.
Back at Lasham, as well as aircraft engineering services, they are now able to offer
part 147 type training to the licensed engineers of the future and have CAMO approval as a Continuing
Airworthiness Management Organisation, able to issue EASA Airworthiness Certificates.
Both locations are FAA approved repair stations.
Scheduled maintenance
of narrow-bodied Airbus jets.
Following the purchase of Southend airfield by new owners last summer, there is
optimism there about the potential market for A320 overhaul and A321 overhaul of aircraft with both aero
engine types, V2500 aero engines and CFM 56 variant A320s, quite different aircraft powerplants. This does
not rule out A318 and A319 maintenance.
The V2500 aero engine is available in seven different thrust settings and powers the
Airbus 319, A320 and A321 family.
The twin-engine Airbus A318, A319, A320 and A321 are powered by CFM56-5B engines. The
first CFM-5B turbofan entered service in 1994 powering an Airbus A321 passenger airplane. CFM56-5B provides
enhanced durability and low maintenance costs. It averages nearly 16,000 hours on wing prior to initial shop
visit, and more than 10,000 hours after overhaul.
All this will widen the ultimate possibility, that with the two aircraft maintenance
facilities together, and the addition of BBJ maintenance, for example, at Lasham, the company can push their
capability for the widest possible spread of aircraft and aircraft powerplants.
RB211 757
maintenance.
Back at Lasham, with their biggest customers Norwegian Air Shuttle and DHL, it is
clear that “First” World operators take only established mro's seriously. There is today a healthy market for
Boeing 757 maintenance and RB211 engine overhaul by acknowledged 3rd party mros. Many bigger operators used
to do their 757 heavy maintenance checks and line maintenance themselves. BA for example, have now sold their
aircraft to FEDEX. At Lasham, three out of a total of 4 hangars can accommodate Boeing 757s and, come to
that, 737-200s and 737-300 classics.
Boeing 757-200 equipped with RB211-535E4-B is the highest power to weight ratio in
common commercial service. Such aircraft are operated by Continental Airlines.
They run on a lot of long haul services.
ATC at Lasham specialise in RB211 757 maintenance. The more powerful 535E4 and E4-B
variants (which are the more common) are the aero engines that give the 757 it's reputation.
The infrastructure there includes a 6000 ft. runway that was refurbished in 2001. SRA
radar approach, ATC controllers and fire service available for every take-off and landing.
